Ullswater Valley Map

Clip in for a calm, scenic ride through the Ullswater Valley in England’s Lake District. We set off beneath Little Mell Fell (505 m), rolling into a gentle descent that opens onto the quiet lanes of Matterdale—an untouched, peaceful stretch that makes an ideal backdrop for indoor training.

Gliding through Matterdale, the valley widens as we drop toward Dockray. The skyline steps up around us: Gobarrow Park (464 m), High Dodd (501 m), and the standout Place Fell (657 m). These classic Lakeland peaks frame our first look at Ullswater—a long, glassy ribbon tucked among green slopes.

Hugging the lake’s southwestern edge, we cruise toward Glendinning, a favorite pause for riders and visitors alike. This waterside section delivers mirror-calm views and reminds us why Ullswater is so beloved.

Leaving the shoreline, we pass through the welcoming village of Patterdale. Panoramas reset: Place Fell to one side, the rugged Angletarn Pikes (567 m) and Arnison Crag (433 m) to the other. Near Hartsop, the mountains draw closer as we gear up for a taste of Kirkstone Pass—one of the region’s iconic climbs. We only sample a short section, but the vistas are unforgettable.

On the return, a northern viewpoint gives the valley a fresh, expansive feel. We roll into Glenridding to finish, capping the session with a well-earned snack at a favorite local café—an easy ending to a memorable tour through the heart of the Lakes.

Training day or mini-escape, this indoor cycling session serves up an authentic slice of Ullswater’s beauty and calm.
