Our Ullswater adventure begins at Dale Head, a quiet and remote location surrounded by the natural beauty of the eastern Lake District. Leaving behind the busy tourist areas, the route takes you through peaceful countryside where rolling hills, open landscapes, and dramatic mountain views create the perfect setting for an inspiring cycling experience.
The first challenge of the journey is the climb across Martindale Common. This wild and beautiful section captures the true spirit of Lake District cycling, with quiet roads, challenging terrain, and incredible panoramic views stretching across the surrounding fells.
As we make our way through Martindale, we pass the historic St Martin’s Church and St Peter’s Church, two beautiful landmarks surrounded by the impressive backdrop of Hallin Fell. Here, the first views of Ullswater Lake appear, offering a spectacular introduction to one of the Lake District’s most iconic landscapes.
The route then descends towards Howtown, a picturesque lakeside hamlet offering some of the finest views in the region. With the peaceful waters of Ullswater beside you and the mountains rising dramatically around the valley, this section provides a truly memorable cycling moment.
Continuing north, we arrive at Pooley Bridge, one of Ullswater’s most famous villages. Surrounded by beautiful countryside and sitting at the northern end of the lake, Pooley Bridge perfectly represents the charm and character of the Lake District.
Leaving the village behind, we continue along the western shore of Ullswater, where the scenery constantly changes. Woodland, mountain slopes, open fields, and reflections across the lake create a spectacular backdrop throughout the ride.
The final part of the route takes us through the peaceful village of Watermillock, known for its incredible views across Ullswater and its tranquil atmosphere.
The ride concludes in Glenridding, a beautiful lakeside village located beneath the dramatic peaks of Place Fell. With mountains surrounding the valley and Ullswater stretching into the distance, it provides the perfect ending to this unforgettable virtual cycling adventure.
